The region to be served by the new
library was once a traditional Northwest logging community, but with
the decline of the logging industry, it is now a verydiverse community.
Immigrants from Russin and the Ukranie now make up 30% of our community,
as well as many new pople moving here from urgan areas looking for
an inexpensive place to live. This Kendall-North Fork area is a
large geographic area with a scattered population and is the fourth
largest community in Whatcom County. The area is unincorporated,
has very few organized services, and includes a high proportion of
low- to moderate-income households: 71% of children enrolled at Kendall
Elementary School are eligible for free or reduced price lunches.
The Kendall-North Fork area has the larges number of economically
disadvanted families in the county and 24% of the populaion resides
in households below the poverty line.
