| The Building and Design Committee of the North Fork
Community Library Building Project, a community volunteer advisory
committee, has developed a Floor Plan and Building Design that meets
the needs of our rural community as well as the Whatcom County Library
System. |

| The
Current Library |
| |
The
current library is housed in the Maple Falls Town Hall,
which is a small, shared-use community building in the
town of Maple Falls. The library has the use of 400 sq.
ft. of permanent space but requires moving 50 pieces of
furniture every day into an additional 700 sq. ft. room
which then has to be put away every night at closing. Everything,
from shelving to computers, is on wheels. The library also
has the only 2 public Internet access computers for the
entire region.
The Maple Falls Library is well-loved and well-used by the community, checking
out over 40,000 items.
School children make weekly visits from the school five miles away, and Pre-school
programs and after-school programs are regular events. |

| Why
is a larger library needed? |

The construction
of a new full-service public library facility, serving
the rural communities of Kendall, Peaceful Valley, Paradise
Estates, Maple Falls and Glacier in the Kendall/ North
Fork area of eastern Whatcom County, in northwestern
Washington State is the result of 8 years of planning
and an extensive Needs Assessment by the Whatcom County
Library System.
To respond
to population growth as well as a huge increase in
library use:
* The fast-paced population growth of the Kendall/North Fork area has resulted
in a library circulation increase of over 115% since the year 2000.
* The overall library circulation increase since the Maple Falls Library opened
in1984 is 300%.
* The current Maple Falls Library circulates over 40,000 items per year, serving
an area of approximately 40 square miles and a population of approximately 7,000
residents.
